The best part of this recipe is the simplicity of recipe.  You still use your basic whole wheat bread recipe and use yet another technique to create another wonderful creation to WOW the crowd with your wonderful cooking ability.  What can I say?  This is a winner idea...it is a nutritious alternative to the nasty white, enriched hotdog buns in the store....it saves you money!  When making any bread items with this inexpensive bread dough, you save money!!  I love it!

Now for the trick to your homemade whole wheat hotdog buns!!

Step One:
Oil the counter surface and roll the dough 1/2" thick.  Mine started rising really fast so I had to roll flat even while I was cutting!

Step Two:
Cut in strips.   The Norpro cutter scraper is the best tool to do multiple jobs.  In this case, cutting my bread dough.

Step Three:
Place side by side in fitted pan.  You want the buns to rise upward, so you have them slightly touching which will force the dough to go upward rather than spread out. :)  Only let them rise slightly as the bread dough will rise while in the oven and you don't want them to get really high.

Step Four:
Bake 350 about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.  Optional: glaze with butter to give it a shiny look.  Cool and have a good hotdog with your fresh whole wheat hotdog bun!

Note from Paula:  We used the new hotdogs from Oscar Meyer (found in local grocery store) that do not have any nitrites or additives.  They are all beef and totally natural.  They actually do taste good!  This is speaking from a gal who never really liked hotdogs.  Unfortunately, my family loves them so I try to get natural ones.

  1. Thanks for the helpful tips. I'll be trying your technique, since my kids love homemade buns. We also buy the uncured hot dogs. All beef is SO good, but the turkey dogs are cheaper.

  2. I've tried to make hot dog buns before, and now I know why they don't work quite right. Thanks for the tips so I can make them better! How many buns do you get out of one loaf worth of bread? You say to roll out 1/2" thick, but what dimensions?

  3. You are welcome. :) I would guess that one loaf of bread dough will yield around 4-5 buns.

Sorry for not having my ruler next to the pic. I usually have it there for ease of the readers. :) You can roll the dough out as long as you want. The width will depend if you want the short hotdog buns or the 'bun' length hotdog bun. Personally, I rolled mine out to 6".

My kids really like these buns and tell me they don't want the store bought buns. They are a real treat. :)
