Family Toffee

This is my mother's family recipe that has been a tradition for over 50 years! We love it and get to enjoy it only at Christmas and New Year's. It has sugar but we decided we only do it once a year so we close our eyes and eat away! :)

2 sticks margarine (You can use butter but it will bubble and cause the toffee to have air bubbles, which will make the presentation not as pretty.
1 cup sugar
3 T cold water
8 oz. blanched raw almonds

Topping:
2/3 cup German sweet chocolate
1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts

Boil and stir constantly till it reaches an amber color. As soon as it boils, add the raw/blanched almonds. When almonds pop like popcorn would, it is done!

Pour onto wax paper or parchment paper. While it is still hot, pour heated German sweet chocolate over the toffee and top with chopped walnuts.

When cooled, break into bite size pieces.
