Fun Valentine Cookies!
You can really use any sugar cookie recipe but below is our favorite. The main thing I want to show you is a technique for the cookie dough.
Step ONE:
Cut round shaped cookies and sprinkle with red dyed sugar (okay not so healthy.) On one round cookie, use a small heart cookie cutter and cut a small heart shaped cookie out of the round cookie. Sprinkle these with red dyed sugar and you will make them into bite size cookies later!
Step TWO:
After baked and cooled; warm red dyed icing and spot fill the round cookie. Don't overfill! While icing is warm, apply the heart cookie (with center cut out), press gently onto the round cookie with the dab of icing. Icing will fill the center 'cut out' section. This is making a cookie sandwich.
Now to Bite Size Heart Cookies which are just as fun! This is the new trend to make "Bite Size" desserts. You may have seen them in the stores..."Bite Size Cake"; "Bite Size Pop," etc. These are a Valentine Bite Size Cookie!
Put a dab of red icing on one baby heart cookie and place another one over it. They will make nice little bite size cookies. So fun!
Our favorite family, Sugar Cookie Recipe:
3/4 c butter (soft)
1 c. raw sugar
2 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp almond
2 1/2 c whole wheat pastry flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
Cream butter with sugar, eggs, vanilla and almond. Sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Mix into the butter mixture. Chill 2-3 hours. Roll out till 3/16th of an inch. Cut into desired shapes. Bake on a GREASED cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 7-8 minutes, or until edges are just starting to turn golden. Cool and frost. Makes 5 dozen.
Note from Paula: Using the Bosch bowl scraper is great with this cookie recipe as it incorporates all the dough quickly (click here to learn more!) The other attachment I love using when making cookies is the L'Equip Flour sifter for the Bosch mixer. The flour is still fresh and full of nutrition but light and fluffy. It is a great Bosch accessory. (Click here to learn more!
Another Idea...Heart Cookie Bouquet!
The heart pancake ring (Click here) is the perfect size for a giant cookie to decorate or give as a gift. You can even use this type cookie to make a cookie bouquet.
Simply cut small dowel rod (I buy them at Wal-Mart) into the desired length of your 'stem.' Cut the cookie shape and lay it on your baking sheet. Gently insert the rod to one end of the cookie.
You will need a thick cookie and the rod to penetrate the cookie about 1 1/2" inches. Then, bake as directed. :) Make more cookies than you want for the cookie bouquet, as some will break when removing them from the cookie sheet. Cool; decorate. Insert the cookies into a Styrofoam base. Remember they will be heavy so you will need to weight your basket so it won't be top heavy. :) Have fun making memories.
