Homemade Croutons!

Valentine Shaped Crouton!

Add this to your salad and spruce up your salad adding romance to the dinner!

4 slices of bread, about 1/4" thick
2 T unsalted butter
2 T oil
1 T finely chopped parsley

Cut the bread into heart-shaped pieces. Use a small heart shaped cookie cutter. Heat the butter and oil in a frying pan over low heat. Add the bread shapes to the pan in a single layer. Saute on each side until golden, about 5 minutes. Then, dip one side of the heart into finely chopped parsley.

Another option for making croutons!
You can also simply butter sliced bread on both side and place on cookie sheet. Bake 350 degrees for about 5 min. It will make a crispy melba toast that you would simply cube into croutons. You will want to freeze them as they will mold because they are natural bread.

Making croutons with your bread is a great thing to do with your failed bread. I just had a gal called who forgot to add the yeast her large batch of bread. She thought she would have to throw the whole thing away. Not so...think bread crumbs, croutons. Neither of these require light fluffy bread. Dense bread will work just as well as light and fluffy. :)
Enjoy!

  1. I make croutons out of dry bread all the time (though not in this beautiful heart shape). However, I cube them, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with Italian seasoning and garlic salt. Then bake them at 350 until crispy, turning them once to brown evenly. We love them in a grilled chicken salad...or any salad for that matter!

  2. I encourage everyone never to throw away the stale bread nor the oops bread. There are so many times I forgot to put my loaves in the oven; they over rose; and then sink while baking. These are not beauties for a loaf of bread but make great croutons. :)

Your suggestion sounds wonderful! Olive oil is great base for croutons. Thanks for posting and sharing it with us all.
